The Value of
Positive and Negative SU and ATS Streaks in the NBA -
Ken Angland
The stats in this article are through February 12, 2004.
The Atlanta Hawks (18-35) have struggled throughout the season.
From December 10-20, Atlanta lost seven consecutive games both
SU and ATS. Most of the games were lost by a large margin. The
Hawks players’ performance level was definitely in a negative
mode. However, this team posted an impressive winning streak of
seven consecutive games from January 13-25. During that steak
they were impressive against some top caliber teams winning SU
against the Spurs and Pistons. Also, the Hawks won covered the
spread against the Pacers twice. During this run they were
playing with a high level of confidence, so there is some value
in following a streak.
The Dallas Mavericks (33-19) have been in several streaks this
season. From November 3-8, Dallas was 0-4 ATS with two of those
games against weak teams (Miami and Washington). Also, from
January 5-11, Dallas was 0-4 ATS once again. The players’
performance level started the ascending mode on January 12 as
the Mavericks generated a winning streak of nine consecutive
games in SU fashion. During this run they were 7-1-1 ATS. The
confidence level was in a descending mode from January 28 -
February 9 as the Mavericks posted a 2-4 record ATS. This team
could very well be in several more streaks as the season
progresses, so keep your eyes on this team for those situations.
The Detroit Pistons (33-21) have been in a few positive and
negative streaks of their own this season. From December 6-19,
the team’s confidence level was in a negative mode as the
Pistons were 1-5 SU and 0-6 ATS. From December 27 - January 19,
this team turned things around in a big way with an awesome
winning streak of 13 consecutive games. What a difference one
week can make as that positive steak started one week following
a negative run. At that point, the players’ performance level
was definitely in a positive mode. Also, the Pistons were 10-3
ATS during this winning streak. From January 25 - February 6,
Detroit was 0-6-1 ATS. The Pistons have definitely experienced
their highs and lows this season, and are on another negative
streak as the All-Star break approaches going 0-5 SU and 1-4 ATS
in their last five games. Follow this team as the second half
unfolds to find out if the streak continues.
The Memphis Grizzlies (30-22) have experienced the peaks and
valley of streaks this season. Memphis lost three consecutive
games SU and ATS from November 25-28. And from December 29 -
December 10, the light switch came on with an impressive six
game winning streak SU and ATS. The players’ performance level
started descending on December 20, and by December 30 this team
had experienced a negative run of seven consecutive games.
During this stretch of games, Memphis was 1-5-1 ATS. From
January 11-25, the Grizzlies played top caliber basketball and
won eight straight, covering the spread in seven of them. Follow
this team as the second half starts. I expect the Grizzlies to
produce more positive and negative streaks much like the first
half.
The New York Knicks (25-29) have been involved in several
streaks this season. From December 1-10, New York was definitely
in a struggling mode going 0-6 SU and 2-4 ATS. Also, a losing
streak of four games SU and ATS occurred from January 2-8. On a
positive note, the Knicks, playing with a high level of
confidence from December 26-30, won four consecutive games SU
and ATS. Three of those games were on the road. Also, from
January 30 - February 8, the emotionally charged Knicks put
together another positive streak of 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS. New York
has lost two straight as the All-Star break approaches. Are the
Knicks in the forefront of another losing streak, or will they
turn the second half around and mount a charge against the
Atlantic Division leading Nets? Follow the Knicks in the second
half for more peaks and valleys.
There is value in following the SU and ATS streaks, both
positive and negative, in the NBA. It’s natural to attempt to
predict when a team will stop a streak. I’m guilty of that at
times, however, as presented in this article, it’s clear to
see there is value in those streaks. So, as the second half of
the NBA season starts, follow those positive and negative
streaks.
